Why do people watch birds?
Answers:
What kind of bird is this?
This is a flicker. The flicker is a New World bird related to the woodpecker. Like woodpeckers, flickers peck loudly and rapidly at trees and other structures to mark their territory, which is known as "drumming."
Where does it live? What does it eat?
Flickers also nest in holes in trees, but unlike woodpeckers, flickers find their food on the ground. They mostly eat insects, as well as seeds and berries.
Why do people watch birds?
There are many reasons to watch birds! Many people enjoy the company of others as they look for birds together, and some people feel closer to nature by observing seasonal rhythms, such as migration. And for some people it can just be a fun excuse to head outdoors and explore. You can see this flicker on display in the Science Gallery at the Karshner Center now, along with other birds and eggs.
