What is this contraption?
This is a stereoscope! The viewer portion holds two lenses, one in front of each eye. The lenses are made specially to change how the light from the image is perceived by the person using the stereoscope, so that an image seen through the viewer seems to have depth, unlike an ordinary flat photograph.
When was it used?
This stereoscope dates from the turn of the twentieth century, but there have been other, more modern versions sold since the 1940s, mainly in toy stores. The first stereoscope was invented in the 1830s in Britain, but various versions of the device have been enjoyed as a novelty for generations.
