This is a modern reproduction of a shield made in the traditional style of the Luo people of western Kenya, in central Africa. Shields made by the Luo were usually made of cowhide, reinforced by wooden supports, and sealed with honey, blood, and wax.

These shields were used by the Luo both in war and for ceremonies, as for example during the burial of elders. The designs on the shields could have a personal meaning or represent a tribal or family symbol.

This shield is part of our new exhibit, Around the World in 80 Days, which showcases artifacts from cultures across the globe as seen during the adventures of world-travelers. It is on display now!
