Where do you think these shoes come from?
This is a type of traditional shoe called a bakya, from the Philippines. It is made out of a lightweight wood, with a strap to hold it onto the foot. For centuries they were the most popular type of shoe in the Philippines, until being largely replaced by rubber sandals.
Who wore them?
As a traditional footwear, bakya were worn by men, women, and children in the Philippines. Bakya are still a popular footwear in the Philippines, where many modern variations have been made on the traditional style.
When do you think they were made?
These bakya were probably made in the first half of the 20th Century, and were donated to the Karshner Center in 1944.
