What kind of animal do you think this came from?

This is the dried skeleton of a Gumboot chiton, also called the "giant" chiton, a seagoing mollusc whose family tree extends 400 million years into the past. Its exoskeleton consists of eight interlocking plates which move as it moves.

Where does it live?

Chitons live in oceans around the world, widespread throughout all the various climates. The Gumboot chiton in particular lives in the shores around the northern Pacific Ocean.

What does it eat?

The Gumboot chiton eats mainly algae and other sea vegetation.
