This is a fossilized tooth from a Great White Shark! Even though a shark's bones are made of cartilage, they can still be found in the fossil record.
How old is it? How was it formed?
Scientists believe the earliest known fossils of Great White Shark teeth date from about 16 million years ago. In fact, most of what we know of the evolutionary development of the shark is determined by studying teeth such as this one. This fossil likely formed after its owner died and was buried in sediment such as mud and silt.
