What do you think this stone was used for?
This human-made tool shaped from stone is one of the oldest types of tools used by humans. Perhaps you can guess from the shape that the smooth middle section works as a handle or grip, so the large flattened end can be used to pound or smash roots or fibers, or whatever needs to be smashed. Fittingly, this type of tool is referred to by archaeologists as a hammerstone.
Who would have used it? Where did it come from?
Because they are easy to make and have innumerable uses, hammerstones have enjoyed a long use among peoples everywhere. This particular hammerstone was used by Coast Salish Peoples, around the area we now know as British Columbia. It was donated to the Karshner Center in 1935.
