What is this mode of transportation called? Who would have used it?

This is a carved wooden model of a palanquin, more generally referred to as a "litter". As you can see from the picture, a person rides inside a box-shaped carrier, supported by two poles which are carried by a person at both ends. As you might be able to guess, transportation of this type was reserved for people from higher social classes.

Where do you think this model was made?

This model was carved in China in the 1980s, and donated to the Karshner Center in 1982.
