This is a brass oil lamp from India! Oil is kept in the main chamber and ignited at the tip of the spout, which keeps the flame burning until the oil is consumed.

This oil lamp was purchased and used during Diwali, the Festival of Lights, a Hindu religious festival which takes place in late October to early November every year. The time of celebration varies with each year because the traditional Hindu calendar is lunisolar, which means time is marked out based on both the sun and the moon. The calendar most widely followed in our neck of the woods is solar, which is why we have to have leap years.
