This is chalcedony (pronounced "kal-se-do-nee"), a gemstone that comes in a variety of colors and configurations.

The word "chalcedony" comes from the town of Chalcedon, in Turkey. The uses of chalcedony have been dated by archaeologists as beginning over 30,000 years ago in Australia, and throughout the Bronze Age in Asia and around the Mediterranean. Its easiness to work has made it a desirable material for sculpture, beads, and other decorative objects.
