Where do these shoes come from?
These are geta, a traditional footwear from Japan made of solid wood, pictured here with tabi socks. Geta have one or two "teeth" on the bottom that raise the feet from the ground. There are many styles of geta, and even various sizes for the "teeth" so wearers would stand at different heights.
Who wore them?
Geta were worn by men and women, from all parts of society, and are still often worn today as part of traditional Japanese dress. These geta are on display right now in the Asia section of our Around the World in 80 Days exhibit — come explore the world with us!
