Week 6: Civil War Drum

How old is this drum?

Why was it important?

Answers:

How old is this drum?

This drum was made in the 1860s, and was used by soldiers in the Union Army during the American Civil war. Drummers in battle would use a strap over their shoulder to carry their drums while they played them. The sound of the drum was sometimes used to accompany music played on other instruments, and other times it provided a steady beat to march to.

Why was it important?

Music on the battlefield in the Civil War was very important in keeping up the spirits of the soldiers, and in some cases was credited with helping win battles. The two other instruments commonly heard in battle were the bugle and the fife. This drum is currently on display in the North America section of our Around the World in 80 Days exhibit — come check it out!
