This is a fossilized colonial coral. Coral are invertebrates which live in the ocean, often as vital members of a reef. The animal itself is a tiny polyp with tentacles around its mouth, and a hard exoskeleton linking it to other polyps, forming a colony.
Where did it live?
It was found along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. This one was alive during the Devonian era, about 400 million years ago. Coral reefs can be found around the world, mostly in shallow water areas. However, some corals do live in deeper waters where light does not reach, although at those depths their reefs contain a much smaller variety of life.
