Week 24: Zuni Pottery

Who made this bowl?

What was it used for?

Answers:

Who made this bowl?

This bowl was made by the Zuni tribe of Indians, who now reside in Western New Mexico. Painted along the side are frogs, tadpoles, and dragonflies, which are important symbols among pueblo tribes.

What was it used for?

Zuni tradition teaches that the first people emerged from the earth. Zuni Indians dug square-walled rooms into the ground, called Kiva, where important spiritual events took place. Pots like this were often used in ceremonies. While this artifact is very old, Zuni artists are still making items just like it, based on traditions that have been handed down for generations.
