Artifact of the Week: Kenyan Repurposed Sandals

What do you think these are?

What are they made of?

Where were they made?

Answers:

It may be a little tough to tell from the photo, but these are sandals made out of automobile tires that had lost most of their tread. Have you ever turned something that had outlived its usefulness into something new? Or even done the same thing with shoes?

Where were they made?

They were made in Kenya, in Eastern Africa, and were donated to the Karshner Center in 1996.
