This is a "Balopticon," which was a projector which displayed images on a screen. The images could be projected either from glass slides or, using a mirror, any solid object in the area just behind the projector.
When do you think it was made?
It was made by the Bausch and Lomb corporation in 1911 and donated to the Karshner Center in 1986.
