This bird is made from the dried leaves of the hala (or pandanus) tree, which is native to the Pacific Islands, Eastern Australia, and Malesia. The Pandanus grows in the coastal regions, and is cultivated for its leaves, fruit, seeds, an flowers, each of which have various uses across cultures.
Where was it made? Who made it?
This bird figure was crafted in Hawaii by a local craftsperson and purchased by Doctor Karshner while on vacation there with his wife Ella, back before Hawaiian statehood when it was still the Sandwich Islands.
