This is a wooden mortar and pestle, an ancient type of equipment still used around the world for preparing food, medicine, and other things that require grinding. It was made in Nigeria, and was donated to the Karshner Center in the 1970s.

Who might have used it?

This particular mortar and pestle was most often used to smoosh yams, one of the traditional staple foods of Nigeria, and is used by people who are preparing food.
